American River-PackageOne Inc. is in the packaging-materials distribution industry, which for years was driven by low-tech tasks: handwritten order-taking, basic box-making and printing. But to help it better compete for business, the six-year-old company diligently has plugged high technology into its operations, first with an in-house WiFi inventory system, and then with RFID, a cutting-edge scanner/tag system. Using such networked wireless systems, both to automate its core business operations and fold in acquisitions, has resulted in efficiency and fast-paced growth.
Sacramento-based American River-PackageOne has grown to $40 million in annual revenue, has 200 employees and expects to hire another 30 through 2007. The company recently invested $300,000 in two hires and new packing equipment. By the end of next year, company CEO and managing director Tom Kandris expects revenue to hit nearly $67 million.
“We differentiate ourselves in the marketplace by using technology that many competitors have yet to embrace,” says Kandris.
